there was no way around it
After suffering with a cold/flu bug for the past couple of days, I was forced to fill the air with the scent of warm, delicious chocolate chip cookies. It's not that I'm going to eat them. I wouldn't be able to taste them even if I did. It's just that it smells so right for this time of year. Cooler temps = warm soup AND warm chocolate chip cookies. It's elementary. I figure I might as well enjoy some good smells... since my throat feels like it's been power raked, my head feels like it's going to explode, and my body aches like no other. I don't have even an ounce of energy right now. Other than that, I'm peachy!! Mmmmm... warm peach crisp...

that's how we rolo
Today, I'm sharing our book club's to-die-for Rolo Cookie recipe in honor of our fabulous night on the town last p.m.(more on that later). We have this tradition to take these scrumptious Rolo Cookies with us to the all of the movies that we see together. Even though last night's movie was an exclusive premier... uptown... at the Broadway Theatre... and I was a little worried about being busted with three dozen cookies in my satchel, I decided to risk it. As you can see, they turned out perfect and I just could not bear to leave them behind. FYI... it's the easiest recipe on the planet to make. I almost hate to spoil the secret of how quick and easily these bad boys come together. But, for the sake of my loyal readers, here goes....
Rolo Cookies
1 chocolate{ish} cake mix**
1/3 cup canola oil
1/3 cup water
1 bag of Rolos
Sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine cake mix, oil and water. Mix well with wooden spoon. Roll out a ball of dough in your hands and then insert a Rolo into the middle of the dough. Make sure dough completely surrounds Rolo on all sides. Roll in sugar. Place on cookie sheet and bake for approximately 8 minutes. Cool and eat until you can't eat any more.
**You can use any flavor of chocolate cake mix. I chose triple chocolate fudge, and it rocked!!
That's it. Really. Best cookies you will ever eat, according to our entire book club, and half of my neighborhood. They make you want to read. A lot. You can thank me later...

daily bread
Yesterday, I decided to chip away at my Fall List by baking some bread. I got a great recipe for delicious whole wheat bread from Brittany, and it seemed like the perfect day to do a little baking. I even got out the wheat grinder and ground my own flour to make it extra good. The loaves were rising beautifully and everything was looking perfect. . . until 10 minutes into the baking process. It started to smell a little smokey in my kitchen, and there was a distinct odor of burning bread. I ran to the oven and whipped open the door only to see 4 loaves of whole wheat bread that were black on top. Well, at least very dark brown. It had only been 10 minutes!!! The loaves still had 20 minutes to bake. I checked the oven temperature and it was set at 350 degrees, which was correct. I have no idea what happened. I've been having this problem every time I bake bread. It's like my broiler comes on and scorches the top of my bread. Talk about frustrating!! It's especially puzzling because I have a relatively new oven and it's a top of the line model. Aughhhh!!! On the bright side, I did manage to save one of the smaller loaves, and it was quite delicious if I do say so myself. Rest assured, I will solve this mystery. There has got to be something wrong with my oven. I will get to the bottom of it. . . or get a new oven:)
